Campbell makes splash for Polar Bears

FAIRMONT — For any sport, it’s important to start the season in the right way.

Fairmont Senior’s Taylor Campbell did just that when the Polar Bears’ swim team took to the waters to start its season this past week.

Campbell led Fairmont Senior’s boys’ squad to a first-place overall finish and took home some hardware of his own in the team’s first meet at the Elkins Autumn Invitational.

He, along with a team of three others, took home first place in the boys’ 200-yard medley relay and the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay. The team consisted of Campbell, Jeremy Sheppard, Issac Kinder and Daniel Cremeans.

The day was not over for Campbell, though, as he also competed in several individual races.

In those, Campbell took home first place in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle and the boys’ 100-yard butterfly.

In all, Campbell left the team’s opening meet with four first-place finishes on the day.

The fast start, paired with the girls’ sixth-place finish, was good enough to give Fairmont Senior a third-place overall finish out of the 10 teams that competed Saturday.

For his strong performance in the water, Campbell is this week’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week.

It couldn’t have happened the way it did even if No. 6 Ritchie County had drawn it up.
The bases were loaded. There were no outs. And by a swing of bad luck a fly ball was dropped in the outfield as two runs came across to score, propelling the Rebels to a 5-4 win over No. 9 North Marion in the final game of the Diamond Dawg Tournament at North Marion High School Saturday.

Well, it took four years, but it’s finally time for Postlewait’s great-uncle to pay up.

  • University hands Huskies first loss; East edges Elkins

The mercy rule has been a familiar part of North Marion’s softball season.
Through the first seven games, the Huskies regularly pounded their opponents with stingy defense, sharp pitching and timely hitting. Rarely did a game go all seven innings for the previously undefeated team.
