All they wanted to do was cry.
But the Fairmont Senior girls’ soccer players held back the tears. Even as they welled up in their eyes when they congratulated Bridgeport on its state championship, they kept the emotions inside. They didn’t let Bridgeport see their disappointment.
But inside, there was heartbreak. It wasn’t supposed to end like this— not after they had come so far and sacrificed so much and especially not after the way it started.
In the first week of practice, the coaches asked the team to go around the room and say their goals for the season. Unanimously, the Polar Bears said they wanted to be state champions.
