ELKINS — While the weather dropped to a chill outside, the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears took their first plunge of the swimming season at the Elkins Autumn Invitational.

The FSHS boys’ team took home first place honors during the meet. Fairmont Senior’s girls’ team also had a good showing, coming in sixth out of 10 teams at the meet.

“We had an awesome day,” said coach Michelle Bright of Fairmont Senior’s performance.

While the teams had a hard time getting into pools in the preseason, it seemed as if Fairmont Senior didn’t miss a beat as each swimmer who swam placed in some capacity during the day’s race.

“It’s very important (to start strong),” Bright said. “Our times were great, and they’re only going to get better.”

Bright said that while the Polar Bears only had a small group compete in the first meet of the year, the team exceeded expectations and will look to improve throughout the season.

For the Fairmont Senior boys: Daniel Cremeans, Jeremy Sheppard, Taylor Campbell and Isaac Kinder took first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Campbell grabbed first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Sheppard took second in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Kinder placed third in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard freestyle. And Cremeans took second in the 500-yard freestyle.

For the girls: Kaitlyn Westfall placed third in the 200-yard freestyle. Sydney Woody, Ashley Bright, Hannah Booth and Claire Craig also raced to seventh in the 200-yard medley relay.

North Marion, which didn’t have any swimmers place, still showed some heart, said coach Lisa Hayes.

“They were able to get the first-meet jitters out of the way, and now they can focus on what they have to do to meet their goals for the season,” she said. “We are looking forward to taking a full team to Morgantown on Dec. 7.”

Fairmont Senior and North Marion’s boys’ and girls’ swimming squads are back in action two weeks from now when they travel to the Morgantown Invitational on Dec. 7.
