Bluefield throttles FSHS for state title

CHARLESTON — Both came into Saturday with two dynamic guards and a championship drought spanning 17 years, or as long as the bulk of Fairmont Senior and Bluefield’s basketball players have been on Earth.

With so many similarities, what separated the teams once the Class AA boys’ state title game finally got under way? The top-seeded Beavers played out of this world.

Bluefield, behind a masterful offensive performance by Anthony Eades and rock-solid defense, throttled No. 2 Fairmont Senior in a 63-43 pasting in front of 7,984 at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.

For the 25-3 Beavers, it marks the third state crown in school history, first since 1996, and snaps a string of four title-game defeats, including last season’s finals loss to Tug Valley.
