Let the battles begin.
Today marks the state semifinals for Fairmont Senior’s boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at Charleston’s Trace Fork Complex.
Two teams stand in the way of the Polar Bears’ pair of soccer teams — PikeView and Bluefield.
The boys will be taking on Bluefield at noon, while the girls have to sit and wait to take on PikeView at 7:15 p.m.
“I’m just sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the action to take place (tonight),” Fairmont Senior girls’ soccer coach Debbie Cattafesta said. “I don’t have any other words of wisdom other than these kids are pumped up and they are so ready. If they can keep their head in the game and stay composed while keeping up the communication, they will go all the way.”
The 14-8-1 Fairmont Senior squad is confident against a PikeView 16-4-2 team.
The Polar Bears have won four of their last five games going into states, and in three sectional and regional games they’ve outscored their opponents by a combined total of 14-2.
“We’re all like a huge family,” Cattafesta stated. “They all step up. If something needs to get done somewhere on the field, someone figures out how to get it done.”
As for PikeView, they played just one Class AAA team, falling to Robert C. Byrd 2-1 on Aug. 18. The Polar Bears rolled past Byrd in Clarksburg, 7-0, on Sept. 25.
When the Polar Bears rolled past RCB, they were in full strength.
Let the battles begin.
