North’s Brooks takes control on mound

FAIRMONT — When you’re on, you’re on.

And when the North Marion baseball team took to the road last week to play Lincoln, pitcher Skyler Brooks was on.

Brooks, a right-handed junior pitcher for the Huskies, came about as close as one could come to getting a no-hitter last Monday when he allowed just three baserunners in a one-hit victory over the Cougars.

The junior pitched all 7.0 innings, struck out 11 Cougar batters and gave up just two walks in the 7-1 win. The only run scored by Lincoln came via error and kept Brooks’ slate clean in the earned run department.

The win for the Huskies was the second of three straight victories, sparking a bit of life into a ballclub which had dropped 9-of-12 to start its season.

For his strong performance, Brooks was voted this week’s I-79 Joe Romeo’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week and will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Applebee’s of Fairmont.
