FSHS loses 5-1 lead, falls to Herbert Hoover in title game, 7-5

CHARLESTON — It’s a wrap. The Fairmont Senior Polar Bears are coming home to Fairmont without a state title.

During Saturday’s bout against Herbert Hoover, the Polar Bears were in command with a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning with two outs; however, they couldn’t close out, losing, 7-5.

“In the fifth inning, I started counting down from nine outs,” Fairmont Senior’s head coach Steve Naternicola said following the Class AA state championship held at Appalachian Power Park. “We got through the fifth inning and I said, ‘Now we just need six outs. Then we get 5, 4, and couldn’t get to the third.’

“We just have bad luck. The sixth inning seemed like 30 hours. ... it was crazy.”
