Austin Bland wiped the tears from his eyes, smearing them in with the infield dirt that had accumulated from catching 27 innings in just over 24 hours.
One way or another, he knew that Friday would be his last day of organized baseball since his wife’s bridal shower is planned for Saturday afternoon.
His Post 17 Legion team had its back against the wall, needing two victories against Elkins and Morgantown to advance to the West Virginia Legion state baseball finals.
But these tears were tears of joy. After defeating Elkins 14-9, Fairmont beat Morgantown 7-4 at Hawley Field in Morgantown Friday night. Post 17 will play the winner of the Morgantown/ South Charleston game for the title at 3:30 p.m.
