Lady Polar Bears take top spot, FSHS boys fall out

(Continued)

FAIRMONT — oooooo

On the boys’ side, Fairmont Senior has dropped out of the top 10 as two unranked teams move in. Here’s the breakdown:

LOOKING BACK: Fairmont Senior went 1-1 on the week, losing to top-ranked Robert C. Byrd but beating University. The Wyoming East-Westside rivalry continues to take its toll on the top 10. East was able to get the best of Westside this week, giving Westside its third loss of the season. East, though, lost to Mountain Mission (Va.) early in the week. Bridgeport picked up two losses in Big 10 play, losing to both undefeated RCB as well as unranked East Fairmont. Nicholas County also lost twice and Chapmanville lost once. RCB, Poca, Bluefield and Petersburg won all of their contests.

SHAKE-UPS: In this week’s poll, Wyoming East and Westside continue to cause shake-ups in the top 10. With Westside’s loss, Poca moved up behind RCB for second. Bluefield and East also jumped up to third and fourth, respectively, while Westside dropped to fifth in the standings. Bridgeport dropped one spot from sixth to seventh while Petersburg jumped up from eighth to sixth with wins. Chapmanville dropped from seventh to eighth. Both Fairmont Senior and Nicholas County dropped out of the top 10, while Scott and Roane County each moved in.

NEWCOMERS: Scott and Roane County have been teetering between being in and being out all season. This week they moved back in. Scott won two games in as many nights over ranked Chapmanville as well as Herbert Hoover and now sit at ninth with a 10-5 record. Roane County won games over Clay County, Richie County and Gilmer County to improve to 13-4 and take over the 10th spot.

BIG 10 SHAPING UP: RCB continues to stay dominant in its second trip through Big 10 matchups. This week the Flying Eagles picked up wins over Fairmont Senior, Grafton and Bridgeport. Two of those wins came against ranked opponents. With Bridgeport’s loss to East Fairmont, the Big 10 has proved that anything can happen on any given night, shaping up for some fun matchups in the sectional and regional tournaments coming soon.

BIG MATCHUPS: The biggest matchup this week comes in the form of No. 1 RCB and No. 5 Westside. Also, No. 2 Poca will play No. 8 Chapmanville.
