East Fairmont boys win; NMHS, FSHS fall: PHOTOS

East Fairmont turned in an impressive performance Saturday to defeat Weir 75-40 at home.

After playing to a 12-9 advantage after one quarter, the Bees erupted in the final three quarters. They jumped out to a 33-14 lead after two quarters and rode it to an easy victory.

Brennon Vincent and Myles Johnson paced the Bees, scoring 17 points each. Nick Greely joined them in double figures with 11.

Ian Hayhurst and Jake Delaney scored six. David Wadsworth, Colton Toothman, Ryan Bower and Ronnie Mills all had four. And Eli Aberegg added two.

“Our production was good and our scoring was balanced,” said East Fairmont basketball coach Tyrone Asterino. “I thought we got out and ran the floor a little bit and shared the ball pretty well.”

The win helped the Bees (7-11) bounce back from a 64-39 loss to Bridgeport a night earlier. East Fairmont travels to Philip Barbour Monday.

Elkins 64,

North Marion 56

Elkins used a strong second quarter and efficient 3-point shooting to down the Huskies 64-56 at North Marion High School Saturday.

The Tigers came out in a full-court press to start the game, but North Marion responded well. The Huskies took a 20-16 lead in a fast-paced first quarter.

But in the second quarter, the Elkins shooters started to heat up. The Tigers hit five 3-pointers— some contested, some open— to outscore the Huskies, 22-11 in the quarter.

Both teams locked down the defense in the second half, but North Marion could never regain the lead.

Chase Banker again led the Huskies in scoring, turning in his third 30-point game of the season. Cody Opron scored 10. Cole Richards had six. And Matt Martin and Quintin Markley added five each.

The loss drops the Huskies to 9-10. They travel to Buckhannon-Upshur on Monday.

“Elkins is a good team that can score in bunches,” said North Marion assistant coach Justin Balwanz. “To hold them to one quarter of high-production was good for us. We’ll get back at it against Buckhannon.”

North Marion (3-4) proved that, despite falling to Elkins, 13-8, during its home opener Thursday night from North Marion High School.
After falling behind, the Huskies proved that you can still take something away from a late-inning rally despite taking home an “L.”
