PLEASANT VALLEY —
The next state champion is here, inside the East Fairmont wrestling room, which overflows with the scent of hard work, the sound of childhood laughter and the intangible quality of youthful enthusiasm.
There he is, sitting cross-legged on the ground next to the Cheez-Its that have been ground into the carpet. Or perhaps he’s that one, smiling through his blue Powerade mustache. Or maybe it’s that youngster, laughing at the sound the wrestling mat makes when he rubs his foot along it.
Sure, right now the three dozen wrestlers — most still in elementary school — don’t look much like the muscular, disciplined athletes who win high school championships. But give it time.
