Fairmont Senior boys take second at Rotary Invitational

CLARKSBURG — Fairmont Senior’s boys’ swim team had another good showing, this time taking second at the Rotary Inviational at the Clarksburg YMCA.

In a meet that included 13 teams, including all three county schools, the Fairmont Senior’s boys team was edged out by Parkersburg by a measley five points.

Junior standout Taylor Campbell again led the way, winning the 100-yard freestyle while his team finished second in the medley relay and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Despite not having a full time pool, coach Michelle Bright said her teams swam well as the girls picked up a 9th place finish, also.

“I think we did pretty good. We haven’t been in the pools in the past two weeks,” she said. “Most of the times stayed the same. We were happy with the performances.”

North Marion came away with a 9th place boys’ finish and an 11th place girls’ finish. The girls’ team tied for 11th with Lincoln.

Jerad Hidalgo came in 11th out of 50 entries and the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay finished 7th.

“Overall I was happy how we did there this year,” coach Lisa Hayes said of her team’s performance. “Last year we kind of walked away discouraged but this year we’re a little encouraged. Last year I don’t think we got any points so to place ninth is an improvement. That’s all I ask my kids to do, is to keep improving.”

East Fairmont’s girls’ team swam to a 10th place finish, just shy of Fairmont Senior.

Rachel Ramage placed in the 100-yard backstroke while Cierra Kindle placed in the 50-yard freestyle.

The girls’ medley relay team, which was taking the water for the first time this season, placed with a 2:00 time and also placed in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

“We’ve got a pretty good group of girls,” coach Nathan Dillon said. “The individual medley group is a real good group. With a few more meets they’ll be competing to qualify for states.”

For the boys, who finished in 13th, Grady Franks in the 100-yard freestyle.

North Marion will be back in the water Jan. 8 when they travel to Elkins, Fairmont Senior will swim at a Tri-meet at WVU and all three teams will compete at the Splash Invitational at West Virginia Wesleyan.
