For all Marion County is known for — Olympic icons, Hall of Famers, some food involving a pizza topping — it’s a pretty great place for wrestling as well.
Altogether, the area’s three high schools have crowded 89 state champions. And it’s a number made even more impressive when you consider North Marion’s at 22 champs and the school is barely 30 years old.
Expect the number to grow this weekend at the state tournament, which gets under way today at Huntington’s Big Sandy Super Store Arena.
Very good, always competitive wrestling programs in recent years in Class AAA, North, East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior have taken a step forward in the first season in AA-A.
