Huskies go 1-for-2 against Parkersburg South

PARKERSBURG — The North Marion baseball team bounced back from Thursday’s opening-day loss to East Fairmont by going 1-for-2 at Parkersburg South on Friday.

The Huskies (1-2) won the first game of the double-header, 15-7, before dropping the second game, 15-3.

North Marion coach Vic Securro said he was pleased with the way his team responded after Thursday’s loss.

“I was disappointed last night against East. I think we were really nervous,” he said. “Tonight we came out of it and got some hitting and scored a lot of runs.”

Travis Smith led the way for the Huskies in the first game. He went 4-for-6 with two doubles. Securro chose to bat the senior in the lead-off spot, and Smith responded by rising to the occasion.

“He said, ‘It doesn’t matter where I play; I’m ready,’” Securro said. “That just shows that he’s a team player.”

Skyler Brooks tossed four innings to get the pitching win and helped his own cause with two hits.

Joseph Jolliffe (2-for-4), Jon Tomana (3-for-4) and Cole Richards (2-for-4) contributed multiple hits each. And Keegum McCullough added a triple.

“We really hit the ball well and got off to a good start,” said Securro. “That allowed us to gamble a little more. It doesn’t put as much pressure on you to let your kids swing away.”

The Huskies didn’t have the same luxury in the second game.

Tomana and Richards went 2-for-2, but it wasn’t enough.

“The second game I felt we were satisfied with winning the first game and we didn’t play to my expectations,” said Securro.

The Huskies return to action Tuesday when they travel to Preston.
