FAIRMONT — Being a catcher is one of the most significant positions on the baseball diamond.

For Fairmont Senior High School’s baseball team, the catcher position is vital to the team’s success.

Filling the void from last season’s star catcher Tre Kerns is the Polar Bears’ new star, Gage Hannah.

“His arm strength this year is impressive,” Fairmont Senior head coach Steve Naternicola said. “He has a lot of zip on the ball and almost every time he throws it to second base, it’s right on the base.”

Hannah’s throwing has improved so much that he has shot down 15 of 17 runners who tried to take second. That’s 88 percent.

“I can tell if I throw a runner out or not,” Hannah said. “It’s a great feeling when I do throw them out. It not only helps myself get excited from getting the out, but it helps rally our team sometimes. I’m just trying to do my part and stay together as a team.”
