The whole idea of Senior Night is to condense years of memories into a single evening.
Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team and its three seniors, however, had one more unforgettable moment up their sleeves on Wednesday.
Down 16 points to begin the contest, the Class AA No. 2 Polar Bears turned in one of their biggest comebacks in recent memory in one of their biggest regular-season games, rallying all the way back for a heart-pounding 47-46 win over No. 3 Robert C. Byrd at the Woody Williams Armory.
“Our guys were absolutely tremendous,” veteran Fairmont Senior coach David Retton said after the Bears fought back from double-digit deficits in both the first and second halves. “One big characteristic of this team is that they’re resilient. They’re going to keep playing, and they kept focused on their goals. What an outstanding job.”
