As the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears ended their season Saturday with a trip to the regional volleyball tournament, they closed out their season as one of the best volleyball teams out of Fairmont Senior High School in the past decade.
A big part of that success was thanks to sophomore Emily Stoller.
Stoller and the Polar Bears started their week Tuesday with the sectional tournament. After dropping a quick match to Weir to start, the Polar Bears ended up playing crosstown rival East Fairmont to stay alive.
Stoller and the Polar Bears answered the call.
Fairmont Senior would rally to beat the Bees in five sets, 24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 26-24, 26-24. During that stretch, Stoller pounded home 16 kills, 10 digs and five blocks.
The Polar Bears’ season continued Thursday when they played Weir again to see who would advance to the regional tournament. Fairmont Senior dropped the first set but came back to beat Weir in four sets.
In that match, Stoller led the team with 20 kills, eight blocks and seven digs.
That win pitted her team against Oak Glen. Though they lost to the Golden Bears in three sets, Stoller had five kills, three blocks, four digs and an ace as the Polar Bears advanced to the regional tournament.
There, the team faced Ritchie County. They put up a fight but fell in three sets. Stoller, though, had five kills, seven blocks, two digs and an ace.
For her strong performance as the Polar Bears wrapped up their season, Stoller is this week’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week.
