NEW CUMBERLAND —
On to the next round.
Fairmont Senior squeaked past Oak Glen in the regional championship game on Friday, 3-0.
In the win, the Polar Bears were led by their ace pitcher in Matt Robbins.
Even though the temperature was cold in Golden Bear country, Robbins found a way to dig deep into his soul and fire missiles at the Oak Glen’s hitters.
“I knew with it being cold that I wouldn’t get as much velocity,” Robbins said. “I knew that I would have to spot my pitches and let my defense do the work. They did great today.”
Yes, the Polar Bear defense did its part while only tallying one error on the day; however, Robbins exceeded his role.
When the final out was tallied via strikeout, Robbins accumulated a one-hit shutout victory to add to his already building resume. It wasn’t just the one-hitter that wooed the crowd. It was the fact that he sat down eight Oak Glen hitters along the way.
