Young Polar Bears defeat Weir, 3-1: PHOTOS

FAIRMONT — Age is just a number to the Fairmont Senior boys’ soccer team which defeated Weir, 3-1, on Friday.

This young Polar Bear team, which started only four upperclassmen, took charge in the season-opener at East-West Stadium after getting the first-game jitters out.

"The boys stepped up, and I thought we played really well,” coach Jim DeNardi said. “Honestly, we didn't know what to expect being such a young team this year and a lot of new kids playing.”

In the first half with Weir up 1-0, Fairmont Senior’s defender Isaac Childress sent a high, arched ball into the box from about 40 yards out that ended in the goal tying the game.

Going into halftime, the Polar Bears were awarded five corner kicks in the final four minutes of the first half but were unsuccessful.

Momentum seemed to be on the Polar Bears’ side in the second half when Childress sent a corner kick into the box with senior Jared Bartrug finishing it with a goal, putting Fairmont Senior ahead 2-1 with 38 minutes left to play.

When Fairmont Senior’s second goal was scored, the scoreboard predicted the end result, accidently showing 3-1 when it should have been 2-1.
