FSHS boys stay perfect with win over Pikeview: PHOTOS

FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior coach Jim DeNardi summed up Saturday afternoon’s boys soccer game with one word: “Gutsy.”

The Polar Bears fought through Pikeview’s aggressive style of play, dealing with bumps, bruises and even a bloody nose to defeat the Panthers 2-1 at East-West Stadium.

Sophomore Caleb Anselene recorded both goals for Fairmont Senior (2-0) to help the Polar Bears remain perfect on the season.

“They were pretty physical,” said Anselene, who isn’t much taller than 5-foot. “They bodied us up and threw us on the ground a couple times. But we stepped in there and threw them on the ground a few times and we matched them.”

Fairmont Senior took the early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Sophomore Justin Anselene collected a rebound and fed it to his brother, Caleb, who did the rest.

“I saw some breaks in the defense and got a beautiful pass from my brother,” Caleb said.

Pikeview nearly recorded the equalizer in the 30th minute when the Panthers lobbed a ball into the box from 30 yards out. The high

hop bounced over Fairmont Senior keeper David Childers’ hands, but it hit the crossbar and rolled harmlessly over the top of the goal.
