FSHS baseball splits at tournament

BRIDGEPORT — When the Labor Day Battle of the Bats tournament kicked off from the Bridgeport Recreation Complex, the Polar Bears were still in hibernation.

By the end of the day, they were in hunting mode.

After starting the morning with a 9-1 loss, the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears bounced back to pick up a 15-0 win in a shortened afternoon game.

Fairmont Senior played the first game of the tournament for the high school division Sunday morning at 8:30, losing 9-1 to the Complete Elite baseball squad, a combination of Brooke and Madonna’s squads. The Polar Bears registered four hits during the contest. Their only run scored on a passed ball.

“I don’t think Polar Bears are awake at 8:30 in the morning,” coach Doug Hannah said of the first game.

The Bears will be vying for a state title in 2013 so the tournament is just one way to get the team into baseball mode. But starting out with a loss is hard to bounce back from.

“We’re a young team,” Hannah said. “We have a bunch of sophomores and I think they were a bit nervous. They seemed more relaxed in the second game.”
