County tennis teams have mixed results

FAIRMONT — All three county tennis teams were in action Saturday, coming up with mixed results by day’s end.

Fairmont Senior’s boys’ and girls’ teams swept Oak Glen and St. Mary’s.

The boys beat Oak Glen, 5-2, and St. Mary’s, 4-3. Against Oak Glen, Blake Hoke, Taylor Campbell and Trey Giorcelli won singles matches while the teams of Logan Orton and Hoke and Campbell and Giorcelli won doubles matches. Against St. Mary’s Orton, Hoke and Giorcelli won singles while Orton and Hoke and Campbell and Giorcelli won doubles.

The girls beat Oak Glen, 4-3, and St. Mary’s, 7-0. Morgan Hoke and Avery Towns won both their singles matches while Alissa Link and Megan Branch won against St. Mary’s. All three girls’ doubles teams won, as well.

East Fairmont’s boys’ team lost to both Oak Glen and St. Mary’s, 4-3 and 5-2, respectively.

Jordan Leonard won both of his singles matches on the day for the Bees while Evan and Isaac Flohr remained undefeated on the year, winning both of their doubles matches.

On the girls’ side, East beat St. Mary’s, 6-1, but lost to Oak Glen, 4-3. Marcie Corder and Ashley Grace remain undefeated in doubles play, winning, 8-0 and 8-3 on the day.

For North Marion, both the girls’ and boys’ team  came up short, falling to Oak Glen.

The girls lost 7-0 while the boys lost 5-2. Winning on the boys side were Devin Hayes in singles action and Hayes and Shawn Humphreys in doubles action.

    After a rather sloppy Area tournament, Post 17 Fairmont managed to turn things around Thursday afternoon at Hawley Filed in Morgantown, staying alive with a 4-2 win over Elkins in the American Legion state baseball tournament.

    After beating Bridgeport, 11-8, Fairmont secured a spot in next week’s state tournament. But with one challenge down, Fairmont moved on to the next: Playing itself into an area championship game.

    Post 2 Morgantown proved that against Post 17 Fairmont Friday night in the second day of action in the Area II American Legion tournament, Fairmont falling, 7-6, late to Morgantown.
    After Fairmont found itself leading 6-5 heading into the eighth inning, momentum shifted hands.
