FAIRMONT — How would it feel to wake up one day and know you’re the best hitter in the history of Fairmont Senior High School’s baseball program?

The Polar Bears’ Fletcher DeVaul can claim that very crown.

DeVaul has tallied hit after hit, accumulating a .519 batting average. During the regular season, DeVaul went 43 for 83, with 38 runs scored and 23 runs batted in, and only struck out four times.

“He’s worked really hard at it,” Fairmont Senior head coach Steve Naternicola said. “This year, coming into it, I didn’t expect the year that he’d have, but my gosh, I’ve never had anyone hit over .500. I’ve had (Trevor) Malnick hit over .400 four years, but he never hit .500.”
