A quick start may have gotten Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team going, but a stronger finish has ensured a shot at a sectional title.
Four Polar Bears hit double figures and the team withstood an injury to star junior Jarin Hilson Tuesday on their way to a 72-52 romp over rival East Fairmont in the Region I, Section 1 opener.
The win did more than sweep the three-game season series with the Bees. It gave Class AA No. 2 Fairmont Senior (17-6) another crack at North Marion, a 80-61 home winner over Oak Glen in Tuesday’s other sectional game.
After not beating the Polar Bears even once in four years before last December, the Huskies have won two straight against FSHS and 10 of 13 overall. The teams will face off for a third time Friday at North.
