East Fairmont’s new girls’ basketball coach James Beckman wanted to make things different this season after the team he took over posted a sub-par record last season.
So far, the Lady Bees are 2-0 to start their season. And they started it in decisive fashion with a 56-38 victory over Lewis County followed by a 62-10 wallop of Liberty (Raleigh).
In those two games, while balance was key, one player seemed to rise to the occasion.
Sophomore Felicity VanGilder started her season with a bang Tuesday with a double-double performance.
The 6-foot forward posted 25 points, 19 rebounds, five blocks and two steals in the team’s season debut.
She followed that performance up with an eight-point, seven-rebound game against Liberty. She also added three blocks, three steals and an assist in the 52-point win.
Of the two games, VanGilder only played five of the eight quarters, speaking to her dominance.
In all, she totaled 33 points, 26 rebounds, eight blocks and five steals in the season’s first two games.
With those numbers, she’s averaging 16.5 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks per game.
For her efforts in the Bees’ 2-0 start, VanGilder is this week’s Times West Virginian high school player of the week.
