Bluefield beats Fairmont Senior for Class AA title

CHARLESTON — Anthony Eades scored 27 points and Bluefield beat Fairmont Senior 63-43 in the Class AA championship game on Saturday.

Top-seeded Bluefield made up for the disappointment of losing to Tug Valley in last year’s championship game.

Bluefield (25-3) went ahead to stay midway through the first quarter and used a 17-7 run, including nine points by Eades, to finish the first half and lead 36-23 at halftime.

Bluefield won the third championship in school history, adding to titles in 1995 and 1996.

Corey Coppola and Lykel Collier each added 12 points for Bluefield, which shot 50 percent (24 of 48) from the floor.

Second-seeded Fairmont Senior (21-7) was held to its lowest point total of the season.

Fairmont Senior was in the championship game for the first time since 1998, when it lost to Woodrow Wilson in Class AAA. The Polar Bears won titles in 1996, 1949, 1942, 1939 and 1927.

Fairmont Senior’s Travon Horton and Jarin Hilson each averaged 17 points in two earlier tournament games.

Hilson fouled out against Bluefield and finished with 11 points. Horton picked up two early fouls, played just 19 minutes and finished with four points.

Austin Norman added 10 points for the Polar Bears.

You always hear the phrase “pass the torch.”
When those words come into your mind, you generally think of someone older, wiser and more experienced passing something along to someone younger, the next generation.

North Marion (3-4) proved that, despite falling to Elkins, 13-8, during its home opener Thursday night from North Marion High School.
After falling behind, the Huskies proved that you can still take something away from a late-inning rally despite taking home an “L.”
