BRIDGEPORT — Call it perfect, call it amazing, even call it inevitable. Each applies when trying to describe the Fairmont Senior girls’ lacrosse team and its run toward another WVSLA state title.
But after Saturday’s championship game, perhaps another word is needed to fully capsulize what the Polar Bears have accomplished — dynasty.
“I don’t know about that,” Fairmont Senior coach Jon Cain said with a laugh.
Whatever the case, there is no denying Fairmont Senior has built something special. And it proved such again at Bridgeport’s Wayne Jamison Field, rolling past Buckhannon-Upshur, 16-6, for a third consecutive state title.
This victory, however, does more than crowd the school trophy case. It closes the Polar Bears’ season at 15-0 and caps a second perfect year in a row. All told, the team hasn’t lost — a span of 34 games — since late in the 2008 campaign.
“It really is special,” Cain said. “These girls wanted it from the get-go.”
