Bees double up Indians

East Fairmont’s softball team closed the regular season the right way on Saturday, edging host Bridgeport for a 4-2 victory.

“It was a really well played ball game,” East coach John Postlewait of of his team, which didn’t commit an error all night.

That sterling defense certainly helped Bees’ pitcher Ashley Martin, who put together another fine start. The right-hander went all seven innings for the compete game, while scattering two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking three.

“She kind of redeemed herself (after the last start with Bridgeport),” Postlewait said of the Bees’ 10-5 loss earlier in the week. “She really hit her spots today and we had great defense behind her.”

The Bees also did their usual thing with the bats, as eight players had at least one hit on Saturday.

Cassidy Toothman led the way with at 2 for 4 and scored a run, while Tori Postlewait belted her sixth home run of the year and added two runs.

Jasmin Johnson finished 1 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and scored a run and Martin had an RBI single. Five others — Mikayla Moore, Hannah Ferrell, Katie Fairbee, Leeanna Downey and Sydney Poslewait — had one single apiece.

East will host the sectional tournament, which begins Monday at 4:30 p.m. when the Bees host Fairmont Senior. The winner of the game will play North Marion at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday in the double-elimination event.

  • North Marion’s rally falls short

North Marion had all the pieces in place for a thrilling come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon.
The four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The tying runner on third and the Huskies’ fastest player on second. Even the clear-blue sky on the mid-70s afternoon was the perfect stage for a comeback.

It ain’t over till it’s over.
North Marion (3-4) proved that, despite falling to Elkins, 13-8, during its home opener Thursday night from North Marion High School.
After falling behind, the Huskies proved that you can still take something away from a late-inning rally despite taking home an “L.”
