Statistical leaders add on during playoffs

FAIRMONT — The Big 10 is down to two.

The West Virginia high school football playoffs enter the semifinal round and both Bridgeport and Robert C. Byrd remain alive in the Class AA bracket.

RCB is the lowest-seeded team left in AA as the No. 13 seed. The Eagles are the second-lowest seed still playing in the state — only No. 14 Magnolia is lower and still alive in Class A.

Byrd will meet up with No. 1 Wayne this Friday, while No. 2 Bridgeport battles No. 3 Bluefield with a spot in the Class AA championship game on the line.

Bridgeport ended Big 10-foe Fairmont Senior’s season last week with a 28-0 victory.

Fairmont Senior finished the season with a 9-3 record.

Bridgeport’s Anthony Bonamico turned in another 200-yard game, going for 212 yards and three touchdowns in the Indians’ victory.

RCB’s Juwan Jones-Wright also had a nice game with 173 yards rushing and two scores.

Not much has changed in the rushing category.

Bonamico is far and away the Big 10 leader and has eclipsed 2,000 yards rushing for the year.

He has 2,026 yards on the season and is averaging more than 12 yards per carry.

The rest of the Top 5 remains the same as the season is over for Lincoln’s Ty Seibel (1,215), Philip Barbour’s Dylan Johnson (1,176), Fairmont Senior’s Noah Harmon (1,098) and Preston’s Josiah Nuse (1,040).

Jones-Wright moved up to ninth in the conference and now has 779 yards rushing on the season.

RCB’s Julian Marino moved up into the Top 5 for passing in the Big 10. Marino now has 1,073 yards and 12 touchdown passes on the season, giving the conference six quarterbacks with more than 1,000 yards passing.

Those above him remained unchanged with Lincoln’s Jarrod Kellar in the lead with 2,269 yards, followed by Fairmont Senior’s Austin Norman (2,149), East Fairmont’s Jake Delaney (1,890) and Preston’s Scott Stone (1,167).

Grafton’s Cole Collins is the other 1,000-yard passer with 1,008 yards this season.

North Marion had all the pieces in place for a thrilling come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon.
The four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The tying runner on third and the Huskies’ fastest player on second. Even the clear-blue sky on the mid-70s afternoon was the perfect stage for a comeback.

You always hear the phrase “pass the torch.”
When those words come into your mind, you generally think of someone older, wiser and more experienced passing something along to someone younger, the next generation.

North Marion (3-4) proved that, despite falling to Elkins, 13-8, during its home opener Thursday night from North Marion High School.
After falling behind, the Huskies proved that you can still take something away from a late-inning rally despite taking home an “L.”

Fairmont Senior baseball coach Steve Naternicola was at a loss for words Wednesday when asked about his Polar Bears’ 6-3 loss to University High School at Mylan Park.
“We didn’t ... I don’t know what the problem was today. I just don’t know what to say,” he answered. “All the other games we’ve showed up, and today we just ...”
