North Marion makes final tweaks in scrimmage: PHOTOS

RACHEL — With high school football just a week away, North Marion held its final dress rehearsal in the form of a scrimmage against Philip Barbour.

The Huskies’ second-team offense scored one touchdown, while Philip Barbour put two into the end zone, one each from the starters and the backups.

Sophomore running back Justin Wheeler scurried into the end zone with the second-team offense for the Huskies’ touchdown.

But in a “game” where the scoreboard remained 0-0, the unofficial final score was perhaps the least important part.

"I think that's definitely a playoff team that we saw tonight. On the scoreboard I'm sure they beat us,” coach Daran Hays said. “But I'd say in total yards, we moved the ball as well or better than they did. ... It was a fairly even scrimmage both ways.”

Hays said he wants to establish an identity as a running team, and the Huskies showed it in their opening series by keeping the ball on the ground for five of the first seven plays.

Quarterback Drew Harker was effective when he was asked to throw, completing five of six passes.

“Our plan is to run the football. And we're going to run the football,” Hays said. “Never will we stick Drew in the shotgun, 5-wide. He's going to remain efficient with the play fakes, with the sprint-outs.”
