West Virginia educators took a major step toward extending the summer practice period for high school sports earlier this week.
The West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission board of control voted to extend the current three-week window by five weeks.

North Marion’s and Fairmont Senior’s track teams took to the course at Elkins over the weekend for the Irwin Invitational on Saturday. When the final gun sounded, Fairmont Senior’s boys had finished second out of nine teams while North Marion’s girls took third out of nine teams.

On a day when the seventh-seeded University of Connecticut Huskies shocked the basketball world with a Final Four victory, another set of Huskies also enjoyed some success of their own.
The “Dogs” from North Marion picked up a pair of victories Saturday over Roane County, 12-4 and 6-3.
North splits with BHS, MHS; East falls: PHOTOS
It seemed as if everything was out of wack Saturday.
North Marion was held to just one hit in its first game and then poured on 16 hits in the second game to beat a team that came back and beat East Fairmont in the day’s final action from Bridgeport.
County tennis teams have mixed results
All three county tennis teams were in action Saturday, coming up with mixed results by day’s end.
Fairmont Senior’s boys’ and girls’ teams swept Oak Glen and St. Mary’s.
The boys beat Oak Glen, 5-2, and St. Mary’s, 4-3. Against Oak Glen, Blake Hoke, Taylor Campbell and Trey Giorcelli won singles matches while the teams of Logan Orton and Hoke and Campbell and Giorcelli won doubles matches.
