With just a little over a month left in the summer vacation season, you’re going to want to do something really special with the kids.Something more meaningful than a trip to an amusement park or swimming pool. Something fun yet worthwhile, and out of town yet not too far away.

Kasha Patel swayed from side to side with the exotic music pounding from the CD player resting in the window seat of the bay window in her Fairmont home, her long, elegant fingers splayed dramatically on each side of her face.Everybody has a defining moment in their lives ...She dance-skipped toward the window and back, and then leaped into the air in a graceful pirouette.... when years of hard work and self-sacifice ...

Unwanted no longer

Jeff Burdoff has a “no cat left behind” kind of philosophy about cats. The lifelong animal lover is making sure unwanted cats find a safe, loving home.“I have a real calling for cats,” said Burdoff, treasurer of the Marion County Humane Society Inc. and former county employee.First was Patch, the multi-color shorthair with a great big loving personality. She had two strikes against her when she allowed him to adopt her: She was about a year old and missing her right eye.“The older a cat is, the less likely it is to be adopted,” he said. “Certain people out there want a perfect little cat, so I had to take her. She was just begging to be adopted.

Honoring our fathers

One hundred years ago a member of a Fairmont Church came up with the idea to hold a service to honor all fathers in the community. Grace Golden Clayton, a member of the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, came up with the idea for the service during the aftermath of the Monongah Mine Disaster, which took the lives of so many fathers. Therefore, two years after the disaster, the first service in honor of all fathers, both living and dead, was held at the church, said D.D. Meighen, former pastor of Central United Methodist Church.
