Oldies Dance, ‘Taste’ to benefit United Way

Fifth annual event scheduled Dec. 6 at Fairmont Elks

FAIRMONT — Hit the dance floor for an evening of music and giving at the United Way of Marion County fifth annual Oldies Dance and Taste of Marion County on Friday, Dec. 6, at Fairmont Elks Lodge No. 294.

Committee chairman Mary Jo Thomas said this year’s event has a few changes from previous years.

“We have a different band this year with Jenna Won’t Sing,” she said.

The local music group, which is made up of band members Greg Patrick, Jim Pulice, Eric Pulice and Ron Yanero, will play from 7 to 10 p.m. In addition to the live performance, Thomas said recorded music will also be played.

“We want to accommodate different types of music so we will have some Bourbon Street, jazz, big band sounds and Jimmy Buffet,” she said.

According to Thomas, the event is unique because there aren’t many local dances that are held in the community.

“The Elks lodge was very supportive of us to let us do it,” Thomas said. “This is the only event of that kind that we have around here.”

In addition to dancing, Thomas said those in attendance will also be able to enjoy great food donated by local restaurants. Other activities scheduled for the evening include a silent auction and a live auction.

“We have some wonderful board members, community friends and businesses that donated items for the auctions,” Thomas said.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person and can be purchased in Fairmont at Accessories by Marlena, Jack and Jill, The Firehouse Cafe or Rider Pharmacy. Tickets can also be purchased from members of the Board of Directors of the United Way or from the United Way office.

According to to Thomas, all of the United Way agencies benefit from the proceeds of the event.

“This is part of our campaign,” she said. “All of the money goes to the United Way.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information or to make a reservation, contact Thomas at 304-366-2912 or the United Way office at 304-366-4550.

“It’s going to be a great evening,” Thomas said.
