McKinley claims re-election in 1st Congressional District

CHARLESTON — Republican Rep. David McKinley has won re-election in West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District.

With 550 of 648 precincts reporting, McKinley earned 62 percent of the vote and won his second term on Tuesday by defeating Democrat Sue Thorn, a former community organizer, who garnered 38 percent.

Twenty counties com-

prise the state’s 1st Congressional District, including Marion‚ÄąCounty. Locally, the unofficial totals in the race in Marion County had McKinley with 9,684    votes, or    55.7 percent, and Thorn with 7,690 votes, or 44.23 percent.

McKinley is a former state GOP chairman who was swept into office on tea party support two years ago.

McKinley has said he wants to make Medicare a block-grant program and give control to the states. Though he doesn’t support privatizing Social Security, he supports increasing the eligibility age and allowing people to opt out and withdraw the money they’ve paid into the system.

He is the first Republican to represent the district since 1969.
