FirstEnergy: Contractor dead at Harrison Power Station

HAYWOOD — Officials say a contractor is dead after an accident Wednesday morning at the Harrison Power Station in Haywood.

Prentice Cline, area director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Charleston, confirmed the death and said his agency was investigating.

The coal-fired power plant is owned by Ohio-based FirstEnergy. FirstEnergy spokeswoman Jennifer Young said the victim was a man employed with Burnham Industrial Contractors Inc.

A woman who answered the phone at the company’s Pittsburgh headquarters declined comment.

Young said FirstEnergy could not release the victim’s age or hometown but extends its sympathy to his family.

FirstEnergy works hard to maintain safe operations at all its plants and will investigate the accident fully, she said.

Young could not immediately describe the circumstances of the accident or the work that Burnham was performing.

Another worker died at the plant less than two years ago, in September 2011. Veteran employee Ned Johnson, 63, of Rivesville, was pinned between a machine and a wall.

The Harrison Power Station currently employs more than 200 people.
