Authorities are investigating more than 40 street and trash container fires that broke out in Morgantown following the West Virginia-Texas football game.
The Morgantown Fire Department says five people have been charged with malicious burning.
Revelers threw debris at several city fire engines, vehicles and officials. In one incident, a light pole was toppled and tossed into a fire.
The fire department responded to 24 street fires and 11 trash container fires. Fire officials said Sunday in a news release that other agencies reported six additional fires.
The fires began late Saturday night following No. 5 WVU’s 48-45 win over No. 15 Texas and continued into Sunday morning.
West Virginia students and their friends regularly start bonfires to celebrate everything from a major sports victory to a semester’s end.
