The West Virginia University women’s soccer team raised more than $10,000 this spring in its efforts to help fight breast cancer.
On March 2, more than 60 teams competed in the “Three’s a Team … the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” all-day event at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility. The tournament was open to boys and girls in grades three through eight, and featured an open division for college-age and older groups.
WVU also played a game against Purdue, the defending Big Ten champions, in the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Soccer Invitational on April 13 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
All of the money raised throughout the spring, $10,132.30 in total, went directly to the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Fund at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.
Funds are used to support diagnosis and treatment efforts and to provide opportunities to help patients and their families in the midst of battling breast cancer.
“Our ladies should be applauded for their efforts in raising this money for breast cancer research,” coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “The 4-versus-4 tournament is an exciting day of soccer for participants of all ages. It serves as a nice gathering place for our players to bond with young soccer stars throughout the state and in our generous community.”
Over the past five years, the WVU women’s soccer team has raised more than $36,000 to help fight breast cancer.
