Athletes in Action lose in OT, 93-91

MORGANTOWN — The top-seeded Athletes in Action took defending champion Jordan into overtime Friday night only to be nosed out by 93-91 in the final of the 2008 Jones Cup Basketball Tournament in Taiwan.

So the Americans had to settle for second place with a 7-2 record. Both losses were doled out by second-seeded Jordan, which had won the two teams’ first meeting on the tourney’s opening day.

This defeat snapped the USA’s seven-game winning streak.

Unfortunately, no details about the championship contest were available. The only report received from Taiwan listed just the final score.

Three of the closing four games were decided in overtime.

Australia finished in third place with a 91-88 upset of Qatar in overtime, thanks to Cody Ellis’ buzzer-beating three-pointer. Egypt went overtime to defeat Kazakhstan 98-89 for fifth place.

Taiwan lost to Korea 83-74 and wound up in last place for the first time in the 30-year history of the Jones Cup tournament.
