WVU women in Reno for tourney

Times West Virginian

MORGANTOWN West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team travels to Reno, Nev., to take part in the Nugget Classic hosted by the University of Nevada, Nov. 27-28, at Lawlor Events Center.

West Virginia (3-1) takes on Iowa (4-1) Friday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. in opening round action of the tournament. It will be the third-ever meeting between the two schools and first since 1993. The Hawkeyes lead the overall series by a 2-0 count.

WVU is fresh off a 73-52 victory over Duquesne Wednesday night, in which three Mountaineers reached double figures, led by junior Korinne Campbell’s game and career-bests of 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Junior guard Liz Repella chipped in 16 points and seven caroms, while freshman center Asya Bussie notched 11 points with four blocks and three steals. WVU shot a season-high 57.4 percent from the field (27-47) against the Dukes.

Iowa (4-1) is coming off a 78-54 victory over William & Mary this past Tuesday and shows victories over Santa Clara, Illinois State and Northern Iowa so far this season. Its lone loss came at the hands of Kansas.

Junior guard Kachine Alexander leads the team in scoring with 21 points and 15.7 rebounds but will miss the next month of the season due to injury. Sophomore guard Kamille Wahlin is the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 18 points per game.

Iowa is coached by Lisa Bluder, who is in her 10th year with the Hawkeyes, owning a 173-110 record at the school and boasting a 529-252 career mark in 26 seasons.

WVU will play Columbia or Nevada in consolation/championship round action on Saturday, Nov. 28, at either 8 or 10 p.m. (EST).
