WVU in eight-team Cancun Challenge field

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University’s basketball team will be in a field with seven other teams in the 2013 Men’s Cancun Challenge, played at the all-inclusive Aventura Palace resort near Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

This year’s Riviera Division features Old Dominion (CUSA), Saint Louis (Atlantic 10), Wisconsin (Big Ten) and the Mountaineers. The Mayan Division will include Bowling Green (Mid-American), Georgia Southern (Southern), Oral Roberts (Southland) and Presbyterian (Big South).

“We’re excited about this year’s field which will be one of the most competitive since the tournament’s inception in 2008,” said Cancun Challenge director Brent Amick. “This is a special event for teams and fans and is played in an incredible ocean-front setting in Mexico. Fans making the trip down to cheer on their school will be able to watch great competition while enjoying the warm climate and beautiful beaches of the Riviera Maya.”

The tournament format includes eight games played in the United States (Nov. 21 and 23) where the four teams in the Riviera Division host the four schools in the Mayan Division. All eight teams then travel to Mexico for two games played in their respective divisions (Nov. 26-27).

All four games of the Riviera Division will be nationally televised live from the Aventura Palace Convention Center on CBS Sports Network. The Mayan Division games will be webcast on CBSsports.com, ULive.

The Cancun Challenge is regarded as one of the most unique preseason men’s college basketball tournaments. Teams stay at the Aventura Palace and enjoy all the amenities the resort has to offer. A ballroom is converted into an arena, and fans who attend the event get an up-close perspective of their team while enjoying an all-inclusive setting.

Previous champions include Vanderbilt (2008), Kentucky (2009), Missouri (2010), Illinois (2011) and Wichita State (2012).

In the end, it comes down to the quarterback.
Always has with Dana Holgorsen, always will.
Quarterback is the offense with the West Virginia University coach. When he does well, the team wins – almost always.
When he does poorly, the team doesn’t stand much of a chance.

  • Growing demands on college athletes concerns Wyant

Fred Wyant, one of the greatest quarterbacks in West Virginia University’s history, has lashed out at today’s growing demands on college athletes.
The 80-year-old Star City resident led the Mountaineers to a 30-4 record as the starter from 1952-1955. Percentage-wise, it’s clearly the best-ever record by a QB in school annals.
Wyant, a member of the WVU Sports Hall of Fame, came here after graduating with honors from Weston High School. That’s where WVU coach Art “Pappy” Lewis signed him to a four-year scholarship.
