Five WVU baseball players chosen in draft

MORGANTOWN — Four current members and one future member of the West Virginia University baseball team were chosen on the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Third baseman Ryan Tuntland was picked by the San Francisco Giants with the 882nd pick in the 29th round, left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 991st pick in the 33rd round, right-handed pitcher Sean Carley was chosen by the San Diego Padres with the 1,018th pick in the 34th round, and first baseman Ryan McBroom was picked by the Kansas City Royals with the 1,074th pick in the 36th round.

Incoming freshman Dmitri Casas of Cherry Creek High in Greenwood Village, Colo., also was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 1,141st pick in the 38th round.

This is the most draftees WVU has had since the 2007 season when four players were picked.

Tuntland is the third player to be drafted by San Francisco, Musgrave is the third player to be drafted by Philadelphia, Carley is the fourth player to be drafted by San Diego, and McBroom is the second player to be drafted by Kansas City in WVU history.

Tuntland finished his junior season with a .325 batting average, nine doubles, one triple, three homers and 36 RBIs, while leading the team with a .416 on-base percentage.

Musgrave, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, went 9-1 with a 2.17 earned run average as a sophomore. Musgrave struck out 81 in 95.1 innings with three complete games, three shutouts and a .197 opponent batting average.

Carley sat out the 2013 season due to NCAA regulations after transferring to WVU from Air Force.

McBroom led WVU in homers (12), RBIs (48), doubles (19) and runs (39) as a junior. He also had a .268 batting average.

All five players were drafted for the first time in their respective careers. They have until July 12 to decide whether they wish to pursue professional careers or return to WVU.
