MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia University women’s soccer team claimed the top spot in the Big 12 preseason poll, conference officials announced Friday.

The Mountaineers garnered seven of the nine first-place votes.

Texas Tech sits in second behind WVU, receiving the remaining two first-place votes. The Lady Red Raiders are coming off of their best finish in the Big 12, putting up a 5-2-1 conference record and reaching their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

In its inaugural season in the Big 12, WVU went 7-0-1 in the regular season on its way to a third straight conference title. The Mountaineers return nine starters from a year ago, including leading point-getters junior Kate Schwindel and senior Frances Silva.

WVU had a league-high five players named to the preseason All-Big 12 team, including freshman Ashley Lawrence. Coming in second to the Mountaineers’ five selections were Baylor and Texas Tech with two apiece.
