White in middle of WVU-Alabama heat

MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia University-Alabama opener next season is heating up already, and, strangely, the man in the middle of it is former WVU quarterback Pat White.

White, on a Facebook post Wednesday, intimated that Alabama offered him a Corvette while recruiting him out of Daphne, Alabama, High.

The post came after Alabama’s running back Derrick Henry posted a picture of himself standing with his new car.

Fans reacted quickly with such comments as:

@KingHenry_2 how much does bama pay you on a weekly basis?

And:

Wonder who bought Derrick Henry that car - Saban or Kiffin?

That was to be expected, as was Henry’s reply:

Grown Adult people on twitter are worried about what’s goes on in my life & what my family does for me #GetALife

What wasn’t expected was White’s posting:

Stop pretending like you didn’t know the crimson tide has been doing this for years. Still glad I turned down a Corvette to become a mountaineer.

It didn’t take long for that to start trending of Facebook, or for Bleacher Report to come up with a story reporting on White’s comment. The story was approaching 200,000 views as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

Whether White, who is known to be something of a joker, was joking or not was not known, but a former Alabama coach from the staff that would have recruited White denied to TideSports.com that Alabama recruited White heavily.

“I didn’t recruit Pat, but I remember he wanted to be a quarterback,” Sparky Woods, running back coach under then head coach Mike Shula, said. “I remember a discussion that we weren’t going to recruit him as a quarterback. That was kind of a closed book on him pretty early because he wanted to be a quarterback.”

White has in the past admitted that he wanted to play quarterback in college and was being looked at by Alabama and LSU as a defensive back.

“I don’t think he ever took an official visit that I remember,” Woods added. “I never met him. I saw him play and he was a good athlete, but I don’t think he ever took a trip to Tuscaloosa or ever was in camp that I recall.”

White, of course, went on to become one of the greatest quarterback’s in WVU history, winning four bowl games before becoming a second-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins.

Alabama coach Nick Saban, at a stop on the Crimson Caravan in Nashville on Thursday, wouldn’t comment on the report, citing that it happened before he became coach and asked “is that the best thing we can talk about?”

West Virginia and Alabama open the 2014 season in the Chic-fil-A Classic in Atlanta on Aug. 30.

  • Were Bowlsby’s fears about college athletics’ future justified?

I have never met or even talked to Bob Bowlsby, commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.
But I did read a lengthy story on his 45-minute address to reporters last week on Media Day in Dallas, Texas. Among other things, Bowlsby forecast a startling change threatening the existence of intercollegiate athletics as we have known for these many, many years.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: Big 12 provides plenty of optimism

This past week the Big 12 held its annual media gathering in Dallas and served up a heaping portion of optimism for the 2014 season that is now upon us, West Virginia University opening its preseason practices on Thursday.
This is a time of year when no one has lost a game, not even Charlie Weis at Kansas, and it’s a time of year when opinions are more plentiful than tattoos in an NFL locker room.

  • HERTZEL COLUMN: WVU needs White to follow in former receivers’ footsteps

A year ago Clint Trickett took a lot of grief as the once potent West Virginia offense came unraveled, but there is more that than meets the eye.
The criticism was not unfounded, of course, although behind each incomplete pass there was the pain Trickett was suffering through to throw it, his rotator cuff in need of surgery.

I saved some other interesting observations from the recent interview with Fred Wyant which you may find worth reading.
He believes a college football coach ought to recruit a quarterback he wants, give him some help, then turn virtually everything over to him and let him go.
