Celebrate Fourth safely with fireworks

FAIRMONT — What better way to celebrate freedom than with fireworks?

Setting them off legally in a safe environment while taking the proper precautions, that is.

Capt. Ed Simmons, fire prevention officer with the Fairmont Fire Department, reported that nationally, there are 20,000 hospital visits and 1,200 structure fires every year that result from unsafe or illegal use of fireworks.

Anything that shoots up in the air or explodes is most likely illegal, said Capt. Dave Whiteman with the Fairmont Fire Department.

People should stick to things like sparklers or small devices that rest on the ground and emit showers of sparks, he said.
