Fairmont council approves fire ordinance

FAIRMONT — Fairmont City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday that will update the city’s fire prevention code to comply with recent changes to state code.

Capt. Ed Simmons, fire prevention officer with the Fairmont Fire Department, said that the changes were mostly routine.

“Really there are no substantial changes as far as the codes themselves,” Simmons said. “There are all kinds of little administrative things here and there.”

The National Fire Protection Association updates its codes every three to five years, and the state will then adopt those recommendations, Simmons said.

“As we have more disasters or more fires, or we understand the reason for certain fires, then they’ll make codes to try to prevent that from happening,” Simmons said.
