One step closer to dream, Kesling signs with Garrett

FAIRMONT — Getting to where you want to be is a process. Fairmont Senior’s Johnny Kesling knows that.

For Kesling, the next step in the process to playing Division I baseball is signing to play baseball at Garrett County Community College, a junior college in Maryland.

The second-team All-State selection, who finished his senior season batting .434 with five home runs and 34 RBIs, was offered a walk-on chance with West Virginia University, but Kesling wants to see the field during his freshman season in hopes to continue his baseball career without having to take any time off.

At Garrett, Kesling plans to play third base during his freshman season while possibly filling in at first base and designated hitter when need be.

The decision, Kesling said, will give the slugger time to fine tune his skills for a few seasons before making the jump to Division I, where he hopes to play at WVU, Marshall or Maryland.
