FAIRMONT — Police charged a 33-year-old Fairmont man with malicious or unlawful assault after he allegedly struck someone in the head with a garden spade July 6 in Fairmont, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint states that Matthew Chase Drennen of 842 Virginia Ave., Fairmont faces the felony offense. Court records show he is in North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $50,012 bail.

According to the court papers, a Fairmont Police Department patrolman responded at approximately 6:52 p.m. July 6 to an area on Spring Street regarding an fight that was taking place in the middle of the street.

Upon arrival, the officer saw a person, identified in the court papers as the alleged victim, lying on the ground with his face covered in blood from multiple lacerations on the head, the complaint states.

The victim said Drennen allegedly struck him in the head with a garden spade “in a malicious manner,” and ran to a backyard at an address on Spring Street. The victim said Drennen was shirtless and wearing brown shorts.

According to the complaint, the officer located Drennen in the backyard, based on the clothing description provided by the victim, and placed him under arrest for malicious wounding.

Police did not indicate Drennen’s connection, if any, to the victim.
