A fire Wednesday has displaced the residents living in this structure in an alley off the intersection of Fairmont Avenue and Fourth Street in Fairmont.

FAIRMONT — A structure fire that displaced several residents this week remains under investigation, according to Fairmont Fire Department Capt. Mark Angelucci.

Marion County 911 said the call for the fire, which broke out in the basement or garage of a house located on an alley off the intersection of Fourth Street and Fairmont Avenue, came in around 5:30 p.m Wednesday.

Angelucci said the fire was contained to the basement and part of the exterior of the building. He said the cause is undetermined and is under investigation.

Virginia Whitehead, a resident of an apartment on the floor above the basement and garage, said she and two other residents living in the apartment were displaced. She is looking for permanent housing and said anyone wanting to assist her with a donation contact her at (304) 435-4696.

She thanked the Fairmont Fire Department, the Fairmont Police Department and the American Red Cross for their responses to the fire.

Angelucci said there was also one person living in the apartment on the next floor up who has also been displaced.

He said the Red Cross has been assisting the displaced residents.
