FAIRMONT —Fairmont hip-hop artist TK Blockstar once again helped area students get the school year off to a good start.

For the second year in a row, Blockstar provided students with backpacks during her second annual giveaway recently at Fairmont Hills Apartments.

She said they were happy to get the backpacks.

“The kids loved it,” she said.

She said the parents of the children were grateful.

“The parents mostly thanked us for our efforts within the community, and simply asked that we try our best to keep helping because people are in need and these events actually help the families,” Blockstar said.

She had some help with her efforts.

“We got the backpacks from a fundraiser I did on Facebook along with a good community friend and FSU double major graduate Amberlee Miller,” Blockstar said, noting Miller raised more than $500 on her own for the cause.

She added that citizens and community leaders like Delegate Danielle Walker also donated backpacks already full of supplies.

The backpacks were a little down this year, but not by a significant difference, according to Blockstar.

“There were a little less backpacks this year than last year, but not by many,” she said.

This year, the giveaway was a little different.

“Instead of a face painter this year, we had Stayci Romell come and do free back to school hair cuts,” Blockstar said. “She cut 25 heads and two children donated to Locks of Love.”

Blockstar was happy to help out those in need.

“I’m blessed,” she said. “We’re happy that we were able to help two years in a row; we don’t plan on stopping. My whole team came together and made this happen. I really want to thank Blockstar Dee, a member of my team, for dedicating so much time and effort into this cause.”

She also thanked the manager of Fairmont Hills Apartments, Misty Cottingham.
