As someone who’s been coming to Huntington since seventh grade, someone who’s seen his older brother finish one win away, Ryan Hinerman had an idea of what a state wrestling championship might feel like.
But when it actually happened Saturday night at the Big Sandy Super Store Arena, with a coast-to-coast 5-1 win over George Washington’s Jake Smith in the 135-pound Class AAA final, the North Marion senior didn’t know what to think.
“It’s the most surreal feeling I’ve ever had. It hasn’t kicked in yet,” Hinerman said. “Maybe in a few months. Maybe when I’m 50, sitting around and looking at the trophy.”
Now, he’ll have plenty of time to marvel over his state championship, the program’s second in as many years.
